I am writing this critique both as a concerned local citizen, and as a PhD scientist in the field of structural geology – the study of folding and faulting in the Earth’s crust.
I appreciate and acknowledge the efforts of all of the volunteers who have put together our local emergency preparedness programs and information brochures. However, I do not believe that all of the information and advice that they have put together is appropriate for our region or for the magnitude of the expected events.

As you take your romantic stroll along Salishan's beach, picture the effect such an earthquake would have today. Measuring about nine on the Richter scale, the initial shock would be roughly 10 times more powerful than the 1906 earthquake that destroyed San Francisco.

At Lincoln City, the ground would suddenly drop about 10 feet, cracking streets and buildings. Surprisingly, the ocean would not surge forward at once. In fact, the waters might even retreat for several minutes, exposing first the tidepools at Fishing Rock, and then the mudflats beyond. By that time, sirens already would be wailing in Lincoln City, warning residents to move to higher ground.

Lincoln City is one of the coastal towns that has held tsunami evacuation drills."

A patient who suffers a sudden heart attack may be better off if the subsequent cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts do not include mouth-to-mouth ventilations, a new Japanese study suggests. Current guidelines say that CPR must include 30 chest compressions followed by two mouth-to-mouth ventilations."

Enhancing Hawaii's seismic network to collect better and faster information about tsunami threats is one of the goals this year of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, says a key official.

It now takes two to three minutes after an earthquake to collect sufficient data to determine if a dangerous tsunami was generated, said Jeff LaDouce, director, National Weather Service Pacific Region.

'We're trying to get the solution for the location and intensity of earthquakes in the quickest time -- in 90 seconds,' LaDouce said in an interview at a recent breakfast meeting launching a yearlong celebration of NOAA's 200th anniversary.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is one of the many functions of NOAA, which manages more than $70 million annually in Hawaii fishery, oceanic, coastal, climatic and atmospheric programs, LaDouce pointed out."

I, and my husband, with bad knees and back, and unable to walk a couple of blocks, responded to the recent tsunami warning. We were watching TV when calls came from relatives, one in Seattle and another from Idaho, who had heard of a tsunami on the coast and were frantic.

'I haven't heard a siren,' I said, but I turned on several TV stations, and there was nothing. So often TV stations interrupt programming to announce a wreck on Interstate 5 or something similar. We waited, and finally the tsunami warning sounded.

So OK, let's go. We picked up three on the corner who had no transportation and had a baby to carry. Before we got to Holladay Drive, traffic stopped and the three, able to walk up a hill, took off at a run. Others ahead of our car followed suit, which left us, and others, in a helpless, hopeless situation waiting for the wave to hit.

In this retirement town, the city advertises that all should walk up the hill. I expect half the population will drown if the tidal wave is 20 miles out. We old people were lucky with this last alarm, but what about the next one? Few of us can walk two miles uphill.

The city needs to immediately sound the warning and notify Portland television"

Experts warn of major quake in western Canada


VANCOUVER, Canada (AFP) - Seismologists warned that a "catastrophic" earthquake could strike the southwestern coast of British Columbia soon, Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

The experts noted rumblings from deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, along Vancouver Island, which could foretell a giant quake. But they said the probability of a quake was still low.

"Everyone drives their car every day, and the probability of getting in a car accident is small" although it rises during rush hour, Garry Rogers, a seismologist at the Pacific Geoscience Centre on Vancouver Island, told the Globe and Mail.

"Well, Vancouver Island is now driving in rush hour," he said.

The newspaper said the activity, known to scientists as episodic tremor and slip, emanates from the crush of the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate beneath the North American Plate, which is Canada's shoreline.

The Juan de Fuca plate runs from Vancouver Island on Canada's West Coast south to Northern California in the United States.

LINCOLN CITY — A new tsunami warning siren guaranteed to be loud enough to wake the dead has been installed at the D-River Wayside State Park.

The five-hour project to install the siren Jan. 22 was a joint effort of Pacific Power, City of Lincoln City, North Lincoln Fire and Rescue and the Community Emergency Response Teams, which handed out information about tsunamis."

'Tsunami' is the Japanese term meaning wave in the harbor. As such it is most descriptive of the observed phenomenon frequently referred to as tidal wave or seismic sea wave, with both of these terms having misleading connotations with respect to the mechanism of generation. In South America, the term 'maremoto' is frequently used. However the use of the word 'tsunami' is most commonly accepted by scientists and by most of the lay public in Pacific basin countries. For the TWS, tsunamis can be categorized as local, regional, or Pacific-wide, with those terms being used to describe the extent of potential destruction relative to the tsunami source area. Local tsunamis will often be associated with tsunami generation by submarine or subaerial landslides or volcanic explosions. An example would be the awesome local tsunami of July 9, 1958, at Lituya Bay, Alaska, where wave run-up exceeded 485 meters but the destruction was confined to a very limited area. Regional tsunamis are by far the most common. Destruction may be limited in areal extent either because the energy released was not sufficient to generate a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami, or because the geomorphology of the source area limited the destructive potential of the tsunami. (Newport, Oregon) - Some three hundred years ago – so the prevailing theory goes – a massive tsunami hit what would become the Oregon coast, changing the landscape and leveling entire forests, not unlike the blast of Mount St. Helens 25 years ago.

The eerie remnants of this event are now visible again on Newport’s northern beaches, showing a series of strange structures and shapes on the beach that look like some sort of collaboration between Roger Dean (the man who did the Yes album covers) and Dr. Suess.

Head to Moolack Beach or Beverly Beach, on the northern end of town, and you’ll find giant octopus-like structures, the leftovers of root systems dotting the beach. There are currently about nine of the big structures at Moolack, with dozens of smaller tree points sticking out of the sand in various areas."

This has been a hallmark week for the LVH CERT team. On Wednesday Greg Pfalmer brought his motorhome to the clubhouse where the entire team participated in a hands on training session. We are confident that every team member can hook up and start the generator and knows all of the safety features and where the circuit breakers and GFI reset buttons are. The unit is capable of 6500watts or 65 amps. This was explained and how not to overload the generator.

We have one more person in the park offering the use of a portable generator and we will be getting with him soon to learn the "how to" on that unit. Meanwhile Greg has made his unit available whenever it is in the park.

Ancient Tsunami Smashed Europe, Middle East, Study Says: "Some ten percent of tsunamis worldwide occur in the Mediterranean.

The most recent volcano-triggered tsunami was caused by a landslide on the Italian island of Stromboli in the Tyrrhenian Sea in 2002.

The volume of the landslide 'was however a thousand times smaller than the Mount Etna one,' Pareschi said.

A tsunami early warning system is currently being developed for the Mediterranean and the northeastern Atlantic. Due to become operational in December 2007, it will form part of a global tsunami warning system coordinated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)."

The first of a planned network of tsunami early warning buoys is being laid in the Indian Ocean.

The buoy is being placed between Thailand and Sri Lanka, two of the countries worst-hit by the 2004 tsunami which killed more than 200,000 people.

The buoy, provided by the US, is able to detect sudden increases in pressure deep under the sea and give coastal communities early warning of a tsunami.

The US already operates a similar system in the Pacific Ocean.

The cost of the US-designed device is being shared by the US and Thailand."

* Overview - During the afternoon and evening hours of Monday, November 23, 1998 most of Oregon was hit with high winds and periods of heavy precipitation. This marked the first major storm of the season with wind gusts to 100 mph along the coast and generally 50 to 70 mph elsewhere in Oregon. Downed trees and limbs knocked out power to thousands in the Willamette Valley and cluttered streets with debris."

Ice storms: "A warm front overrunning cold air trapped in western Oregon valleys and the Columbia Gorge produced an ice storm causing widespread disruption of traffic and power outages in the Willamette Valley and Coast Range valleys. Freezing rain began over the Willamette Valley during the afternoon of February 3 and continued throughout the night and into the next day. Numerous traffic accidents were reported including a 100 car minor damage pileup near Salem. One fatality occurred when a car lost control on the ice, slid off the road and flipped over near Lincoln City."
